ALL THE SCI-FI TV AND MOVIES HITTING NETFLIX, HULU AND AMAZON IN APRIL 2018

The month of April will be bringing some high-profile releases to the streaming world, plus a whole lot of fan-favorite movies (and glorious guilty pleasures) for subscribers of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Let’s start planning your next binge

The most high-profile series dropping is the second season of Hulu’s critically acclaimed The Handmaid’s Tale, which will almost certainly land on a whole lot of “Best Of” lists. Not to be outdone, Netflix is debuting its big-budget reboot of sci-fi classic Lost in Space. The early trailers have looked promising, and if nothing else, the studio spared no expense to bring the show back.
Looking to movies, there’s also a whole lot to love. Netflix is loaded with new additions, from The Iron Giant to Sin City to The Lost Boys to the old live-action Flintstones films (and a whole lot more). Hulu has the buzzy horror-ish flick Tragedy Girls, a boatload of old Land Before Time films, and Spaceballs. Amazon is a bit on the thin side this month, but looks to add the cult hit Small Soldiers, Escape From New York, and Troy.

NETFLIX

Highlights

The Iron Giant: Brad Bird’s modern classic will almost certainly make for a popular addition to the service, and the film is still one of the greatest animated films ever made. It’s poignant, touching, and a whole lot of fun. April will be the perfect time to revisit it.

Mercury 13: This documentary will be a must-watch for space geeks, digging into the history of the brave, unsung women who were trained and tested in 1961 to potentially become astronauts — then ultimately passed over when it came time to send folks into space.

Lost in Space, Season 1: This promises to be Netflix’s splashiest release of the month, and expectations are high that the streaming service will be able to make the old sci-fi series a hit once again. As in the original series, we’ll be following the Robinson family as their mission of space exploration goes dangerously off the rails.

Tragedy Girls (2017): Two girls hoping to find some social media love become amateur murder investigators. But it turns out the best way to get ahead of the coverage is to start killing people themselves. It’s dark and funny, and critics loved it.

The Handmaid’s Tale: Season 2: Hulu turned its adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s novel into a global phenomenon, and now the series is back to dig even deeper into that fascinating world. This new season looks to expand on Atwood’s tale and push the story in new directions.

Escape From New York: The 1981 sci-fi action flick was a showcase piece for a young John Carpenter and helped turn Kurt Russell into a bona fide action star. Despite its age, at more than 35 years old, the film still holds up remarkably well.

Small Soldiers: One of director Joe Dante’s weirdest and wildest films, the underrated Small Soldiers imagines what would happen if a platoon of GI Joe-style toys went rogue and attacked. It’s bonkers, but one heck of a fun romp.
