Everything coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Now in April
With Westworld and Lost in Space on deck, it’s a good month for genre
Next month is April, which means it’s time for the second season of HBO’s Westworld to arrive. Yes, there’s also going to be some “movies” at your local “theater” that may be considered “important if you want to stay remotely in touch with mainstream pop culture,” but mostly it’s going to be about Westworld.
Okay, maybe I’m just enthused thanks to the show’s latest trailer. But either way, only two episodes of HBO’s sci-fi drama will be released during April, which means you will have to find other things to watch — and thankfully the host of modern streaming services will be there to help. Netflix will be adding its own sci-fi series to the mix on April 13th, with the debut of its Lost In Space reboot, as well as releasing the Jay Z episode of David Letterman’s new talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction on April 6th. The service will also be releasing the Sundance drama Kodachrome on April 20th, which stars Jason Sudeikis and Ed Harris. (Did I mention Harris stars in Westworld?) Netflix will also be adding a host of other original movies, shows, and library titles — including the David Fincher thriller Seven, which arrives on April 1st.
Amazon Prime customers will get access to the fourth season of the service’s detective series Bosch, and Spike Lee’s new film Pass Over will arrive on April 20th. Amazon will also be adding a number of horror titles to its movies line-up. The original Friday the 13th? Amazon has you covered. Brian De Palma’s Carrie? Done. Paranormal Activity, for all of the found footage fans? Ready on April 1st. The service is even adding all four Wishmaster films, no doubt because the company’s massive stores of data showed that some of its customers actually want to watch the Wishmaster films.
As for HBO Now, well, you already know the answer: on April 22nd, it’s all about Westworld. That’s not to say it’s the only thing that the network and service will be debuting, however. Problem Areas, the new satirical documentary series from The Daily Show’s Wyatt Cenac, will premiere on April 13th, while the Barry Levinson-directed Paterno — which charts the fall of the famed Penn State football coach — arrives on April 7th. Genre fans will also be able to watch the four original Omen films, while War for the Planet of the Apes will debut on April 21st.
As usual, there’s bad news to go along with the good. Netflix will be losing a number of titles starting on April 1st, including The Shawshank Redemption, Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns, and Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige (which just so happened to be co-written by Westworld co-creator Jonathan Nolan, in case you’re looking for a fix in the next couple of days). HBO Now will also be dropping its fair share of titles, including the original The Terminator, La La Land, Hidden Figures, and A Monster Calls. We’re including the full list of movies and shows for all three services below.
